Crowns are deluxe fillings that fit over the tooth and look just like the one they are restoring. They are a great way to save your it when it may have otherwise been extracted, but if you\u2019ve never gotten one before, you may be worried about what to expect from your procedure. Mainly, you may be wondering if it will hurt. Here\u2019s what you need to know if your dentist has recommended a crown for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Do Crowns Hurt?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The short answer to this question is \u201cno,\u201d your crown should not hurt. With that being said, however, you may still experience some discomfort following the procedure. Your dentist will numb the area before treatment begins, however some residual soreness may occur for a few days after it wears off. This is because your dentist needs to remove the damaged area of the tooth prior to fitting you for your new crown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is the Crown Process?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Once your impression is made, you will get a temporary crown that stays in place until your permanent restoration is completed at the lab. Your temporary crown can be used to eat and drink, but you should be careful not to chew anything hard or too sticky with it, as it can be damaged easier than a real crown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once the permanent one is ready, your dentist will schedule you to come in to have it cemented in place. If there are any issues with the fit, your dentist will adjust it or send it back to the lab if necessary. Most crowns are ready within about two weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How Do I Care for My Crown?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Caring for crowns is easy. In fact, it\u2019s just like caring for your real teeth. Just brush twice a day and floss once a day, and your crown will last up to ten years. Be careful when you floss your temporary crown, however, as it can come loose if you get the floss caught underneath it. Thus, avoid flossing around it until you get the permanent one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remember, getting a dental crown shouldn\u2019t be painful, however it could cause a little discomfort for a few days after your impressions are created. Thankfully, this is mild and can easily be alleviated with the help of over-the-counter pain medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
